To reduce maternal and neonatal mortality, in line with the priorities of the Mozambican Ministry of Health, the project aims at improving ANC and PNC quality, including delivery and obstetric complications, neonatal resuscitation and breastfeeding. Community mobilization is also part of the strategy particularly to promote PMTCT and ART in women and children. The approach will include combining the clinical assistance with on-the-job training, integrated supervision, M&E. Operative research is included in the intervention. The number of beneficiaries will be around 20.000 expected pregnant women per year, 5.000 of which living with HIV/AIDS, and their children, the health personnel of the Central Hospital of Beira (around 80 staff of ghynecology and neonatology departments) and the 6 Health Centers involved (around 80 staff). Last but not least, the project will have an important component of training of medical students of the Catholic University of Mozambique in Beira.
