Main outcome

Biodiversity conservation efforts require a vast array of tools but research, both basic and applied, play a major role. In Mozambique Italy supports Eduardo Mondlane University programmes in order to upgrade its academic skills as well as a pivotal institution in territorial planning. This last aspect seizes not only productive and economic aspects but better land use and conservation. More specifically Italy, between 2010 and 2013 has promoted and financed the establishment of the new Biotechnologies Lab, an inter departmental institute were biotechnologies are developed for agriculture, veterinary and health science. For agriculture, efforts have been concentrated an genetic characterisation of crops such as oil palm and the existing relationship with insect born disease such as yellow disease. This has been used to promote a scientific approach to genetic material conservation and to build up a bio molecular approach to natural and applied science at the Mondlane University in Maputo. The programme ended building a Master degree course. Among the research activities the following could be stated: • Florest Genetic Resources Molecular characterization of Miombo systems in the Niassa Natural Reserve . • Population genetics of Maputo wild rodents: Bar Code and filogeography • Genetic variability in the Chanfuta (Afzelia quanzensis Welw.) population of the Michafutene forest. • Genetic diversity of Brachystegia boehmii Taub. and Burkea africana Hook. f. across a fire gradient in Niassa National Reserve, northern Mozambique
