The initiative responds to the need of a more effective management of the multi-purpose multi-reservoir systems in the Red-Thai Binh river basin, in order to minimize economic losses (for agriculture and hydropower sectors), decrease the risk of flooding and enhance environmental quality. The Politecnico di Milano has developed and put in operation an innovative methodology and a technology which is specifically designed to address the inefficiency that has characterized water management so far. Beneficiaries

All institutions involved in the management of water resources of the Red river will benefit from the project, as they will obtain an analysis and modelling tool to plan and negotiate the use of water resources between different users. The staff of the Institute for Water Resources Planning (IWRP) will acquire the capacity to develop integrated and participated water resource management strategies, and some students will participate in Master and PhD courses at the Politecnico di Milano University. The project will indirectly benefit also all stakeholders of the water management in the Red river basin, such as hydropower producers, farmers especially in the river delta and the population that lives in areas potentially affected by flooding.
