The pilot initiative aims to demonstrate whether it is possible to measure the impact on the reading skills of three groups of out of school children, aged 4-10 years old, illiterate or with a low level of literacy, in rural areas of Ethiopia, through the self-utilization of tablets. This project idea moves from the consideration that more than 57 million children of primary school age in 2011 had no access to education and Ethiopia is one of the 4 countries in the world with the highest number out of school children of primary school age. The project, in collaboration the organization One Laptop per Child (OLPC), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Tufts University and Georgia State University, has been launched in two rural areas of Ethiopia (Wenchi and Wolenchete) to which a third site has been added (Negelle). After the preliminary success in Ethiopia, the MIT has launched a global initiative on literacy (http://globallit.org/) that is currently implemented, besides Ethiopia, also in the USA, Uganda, India, South Africa and Bangladesh targeting children who can never go to school, children in severely overcrowded schools, children in kindergarten and children while learning at home. read more close

Main outcome

The specific objective is to determine whether it is possible to record an impact on the reading skills of a sample group of boys and girls aged between 4 and 10 years, excluded from the formal education system, illiterate or with low levels of literacy in rural areas of Ethiopia, through the independent use of the tablets.

In the new type of the tablets it seems it is easier to extract the SIM card and there are few cases in which the SIM cards have been lost with resulting loss of data.

If the problem persists, relevant data will be lost.

Actions taken

Currently analyzing with the consultants how to overcome the issue.

The battery for recharging the tablets in one of the three site has been stolen.

The tablets didn’t properly work and therefore it was not possible to collect data.

Actions taken

The local authorities have been involved in the discussion with the community on what has happened and how to avoid it would happen again. The reasons behind the theft have been discussed and it has been agreed to rehabilitate the little hut that was hosting the battery, in order to allow a guard to live there and a new battery has been installed after a long dialogue with the community to strengthen their ownership of the project.
