UNESCO initiative aims at strengthening Myanmar capacity to protect and manage its own cultural heritage, in line with the Cultural Heritage Convention signed in 1994. The project has on one hand fostered the inscription of Pyu Ancient Cities in the UNSECO Humanity’s Cultural Heritage sites list; on the other it will train some functionaries of the Ministry of Culture in managing and improving Pyu and Bagan historical sites. Training activities are focused on the conservation of stucco and GIS applications. Main outcome

To build the institutional capacity needed to improve the conservation and management of archeological sites of Bagan and the Pyu Ancient Cities and to create the technical capacity to improve Myanmar cultural heritage conservation.

Beneficiaries

Direct beneficiaries: • Myanmar government, with a strengthened authorities' institutional capacity for enhancing their conservation standard and management system to ensure greater effectiveness in protecting the sites of Bagan and Pyu Ancient Cities. • Public officials, who will be provided with advanced technical knowledge and skills in cultural heritage site conservation and management • Local stakeholders (village chiefs, chief monks, local residents, etc.), who will increase their awareness in basic conservation principles • DoA (Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library), which will have a strengthened capacity on developing and operating Geographic Information System (GIS) for cultural heritage sites.
